Class for 08.03.26~28

Class for 08.03.26

First, professor gave a brief summary of last class. One of it is reading which is expanding thinking. And he referred to replace and displace. Replace means old media disappear. But displace is not. For example of displace is camera.

Key point of this class was "People make media and then media make people."
This is another paraphrase from Marshall McLuhan’s book Understanding Media which was, in turn, a paraphrase of something Winston Churchill said about architecture.
Media make people means media make how people think about. Professor said about instance. That was messenger. Students of this class was born after messenger was born. That is to say, messenger influence thinking method of students. Also he said one more example, name. Before baby is born, his or her family often make his or her name.

And then we talked about tim berners-lee senior research scientist, founder chair, lcs(laboratory for computer science), mit; and director of the world-wide web consortium. Also he was consultant at cern European unclear research center.
He thought about communicating method, and he tried networking, WWW.
The WWW was developed to be a pool of human knowledge, which would allow collaborators in remote sites to share their ideas and all aspects of a common project.
Problem of this research address was that the work was to provide a graphical interface to a set of distributed files used in physics project management at CERN.

what is the www? First, www is a collaboratively authored hypertext. And second it is a standard. With out thinking, each person write two lines, and gather, that is collaborative writing. This example appears meaning of collaborative. "Collaboratively" is very important word in WWW.
People made language for communicating each other. Language is standard. Like this, WWW's all process is standard. www is standard for networking.

ISO (international standards organization) is a network of national standards institutes from 145 countries working in partnership with international organizations, governments, industry, business and consumer representatives. It acts as a bridge between public and private sector. It has created over 12,000 standards. If ISO was not exist, we could not share information. Because ISO is standards.

RFC (request for comments) is kind of technical system. RFC can comment and reply. RFC means that listens opinion, and corrects problem. It is one to one system. There are not head, order.

w3c (world-wide web consortium) develops web standards and guidelines.
There are current members around 400. It is opened. It is not company. If you wanted join, you would pay $63,500/year.

And next professor showed 백남준's media arts. He made random access music and roberts. And he made so many media arts.

Class for 08.03.28

We talked about URI (universal resource identifier) is persistent location. Urn is in a specific name, a specificre source. For example, url(ssu name), urn(persistent location: declare). url is adress wide ranged.

Html (hypertext markup language) is derived from sgml (standard generalize markup language). Html is "try [view] --> [source] in your web browser".

Http (hypertext transfer protocol) is an internet protocol designed for transferring information for hypertext documents. Network protocol is a set of rules used when computers send information across the network. Http compares this to ftp (file transfer protocol), smtp (simple mail transfer protocol), nntp (network news transfer protocol), etc.

What is the WWW? Third, the www is a vast, heterogeneous network of people and machines. Also WWW connects between people and people.

Next we thought about lisa jevbratt. And also talked about mark napier. The web is not a publication. Web sites are not paper. Yet the current thinking of web design is that of the magazine, newspaper, book, or catalog. Visually, aesthetically, legally, the web is treated as a physical page upon which text and images are written.

comments.

Media and people are in interaction. That's so interesting.
And today, WWW is very useful. But I didn't know what is WWW. So this class helped me. WWW is complex, and exciting. And I studied about ISO, RFC, W3C, URI, HTML, HTTP. There are so many function.

I think 백남준 is very amazing people. He made media arts over generation.
He looked at something from afar. Because I want to be that. I will try hard.

Class 08. 03. 21

First, we discussed "what does 'digital media' mean".
When a medium is new, it is often used to simulate old media. And new mediado not replace old media, they displace them. For instance, desktop. Desktop simulate desk. Desktop and desk can serve one's own space and save document, information. Also professor refer to icon and file.

And next we talk about ted nelson who is inventor of hypertext and hypertext: One way that digital media hasbeen understood is as new forms of writing, reading and thinking. Hypertext is the way digital media has been understood. Example is 'Tristan Tzara's recipe for composing a poem.

We also think about engelbart who is inventer of the mouse, 2d display editing, hypermedia & hypermedia email, outline processing, multiple window displays, document version control, shared-screen teleconferencing, computer-aided meetings, distributed client-server architecture, virtual terminal protocols, remote procedure call protocols.

He wrote “Augmenting human intellect". Because He think man’s population and gross product are increasing at aconsiderable rate, but the complexity of his problems grows still faster, and the urgency with which solutions must be found becomes steadily greater.
And he stated problem, better & faster comprehension + better & faster & more solutions to problems.

Imitation is the mother of creation.
For example in this summary, when a medium is new, it is often used to simulate old media.
Also I only knew hyperlink, but I know hypertext in this class. Hypertext is very various and useful. Hypertext is very interesting.

I think engelbart is amazing person. Becasue he invented many things and he think creative.
What he made-the mouse and hypermedia & hypermedia email, 2d display editing and so on- is used around whole fields. That is fantastic! So I wants to be person who like engelbart.

Class 08.03.14

I studied about vannevar bush's article.
Thinking speed was very fast. And there were many information. But methods of transmitting and searching the information were generations old and uncomfortable.
So he combined established technology and bush devised effective method, memex. A memex was a device in which an individual stores all his books, records, and communications, and which was mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility.
Memex used technology, photoelectric microfilm selector. photoelectric microfilm selector
which was an electronic retrieval technology pioneered by Emanuel Goldberg. The usual form of microfilm selector technology was to create a "search card" (a punched card) or template, bearing the coding pattern sought, and align it and the coded areas on the microfilm between a light source and a photoelectric cell.
Because memex used this technology, memex was very effective.

After class, I think discomfort of life motivates invent. That's why bush made memex.
In disarranged information flood, he feel uncomfortable of methods of transmitting and searching the information. So I take care about my life.

Class 08.03.12

The lecture's key points are here. First, when digital media technologies connect or separate people, they became media. Second, technologies embody socaial, political cultural, economic and phlosophical ideas and relationshps.
And we discuss about example, egg white and car.
Egg white connect between wall and powder. Also separate between wall and powder.
Car connects from place to place. And separates between inside and outside , live and death
We also talk about george boole " an inventigation into the laws of thought " (1847) and charles babbage" diffrence engine" (1848)

comments*
I freshly thought about media. The leature was interesting.
I am going to search example of connecting or separating things.
